This book uses screws as a physical metaphor for parasites. During a visit to the American Museum of Natural History’s Library, I came across a book about parasites that sparked my curiosity about how parasites present outside the biological world. I began to consider how parasitic behaviors can infiltrate society, relationships, and everyday life.
Drawing on the industrial visual language used by designers like Piet Zwart, the book connects its foreign rigidity to that of a deadly parasite.
The stark, mechanical forms reflect societal parasitic dynamics and our fears of unseen forces that infiltrate, exploit, and destabilize the systems around us.
Motion Poster for the book.
Process I constructed the book using a laser cutter on scrap wood, then stained it and bound it with screws. Inserts in the front cover holes were severed screw heads and red acrylic circles. You cannot access the book without unscrewing it and lifting the cover off.
